HISTORY (read...)
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish was founded by then Bishop of Palo, the Most Rev. Lino Gonzaga as a personal parish in 1958, largely through the efforts of the Chinese priests, Rev. Fr. Joseph Fung and Rev. Fr. John Chang to serve the pastoral needs of the growing Chinese community. With the generous donation of Mrs. Simeona K. Price, a church edifice was built at T.Claudio St., Tacloban City which later on served as the parish church of the Chinese Community.
In 1970, then Bishop Manuel Salvador divided the Parish of Santo Niño and erected the new parish covered the areas bounded by Justice Romualdez St., through the Magsaysay Blvd. and the Port Area.
Today, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish is both a personal and territorial parish. Its personal jurisdiction includes the Chinese Community of the Diocese. Its territorial jurisdiction, on the other hand, covers Barangays 1 & 4, 2, 5, 5A, 6, 6A, 8, 8A and 25, locates near the port Area and the Panalaron District in Tacloban City.
