History

Formerly, Malibago was located in Bacud Island (now called Naliwatan) a place from which people move to another place, facing North along San Juanico Strait. Malibago got its name from “malobago tree” which grows densely along the shore. This place was the seat of municipal government during the Spanish time, and due to caprice of the friars who had a sweetheart in Babatngon, and to facilitate their courtship, the friars moved the center of the administrative machinery and religious affairs from Malibago to Babatngon, Leyte.
