ARCHDIOCESE OF PALO, Leyte. Today is the first Sunday since the cancellation of the Public celebration of the Eucharist in the Archdiocese. With the escalation of response from the Local Government Units and the Department of Health to combat the COVID 19 pandemic; churches in the Archdiocese of Palo is in full support to authorities. The Archbishop of Palo has issued Circular Letters to guide the faithful and clergy on the conduct of church liturgies in this time of calamity. “We have to participate actively into whatever measure possible, not only to appease troubled lives but above all to halt the spread of this virus eventually.” [1] said the Archbishop.

In his latest advisory, Archbishop John Du suspended the celebration of public masses in the Archdiocese of Palo. [2] Modifications on traditional religious ceremonies in this Lenten Season and Holy Week were put into place as an extraordinary manner of worship in this exceptional moment of calamity. Archbishop John added, “The Church in no way distancing herself from her children.” In this moment of the coronavirus crisis, the best way to exercise love for God through others is to stay at home and obey social distancing protocols and sanitation implemented by authorities. [3]

Together with the parishioners, while maintaining a safe distance, church authorities sanitized their religious spaces. Handwashing areas and sanitizers were setup-up in church vicinities. Since parishioners were encouraged to stay home, the Blessed Sacrament we brought in procession in the street by the clergy and religious. Some even delivered food to doctors, police officers, and other front-liners as a show of support and encouragement.

The solidarity of God’s flock as a Church is manifested in these challenging times. The Church will continue to heal souls in the same way that medical professionals cure the sick. The pandemic has hindered the faithful from meeting Jesus in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. But, the presence of Jesus is revealed continuously in the daily encounter of people. As a family, we gather as one in our Altars at home, for God is present in our midst. People stay at home and observe social distancing because we see Jesus in the vulnerable.

Priests continue to celebrate the Eucharist privately in their parishes. Celebrations are broadcasted by their Public Address Systems. In areas where internet access and connectivity are favorable; masses are also live-streamed in various digital platforms to reach their parishioners.
