In 1963, the late Msgr. Francisco Santiago, parish priest of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, initiated the construction of a chapel in Cogon from a lot donated by the late Mrs. Amalia Aviles. His successor the late Msgr. Filemon Quianzon (1971-1981) continued and materialized the project. He officiated the blessings ceremony of the laying cornerstone on the 13th of October 1972.
Very desirous to continue the construction, he negotiated with Doña Marta Revilla, the owner of OSCO Sugar Central to shoulder the cost of labor and materials. And with the selfless assistance of the civic-minded people of Ormoc, the Fatima Church was completed. May 13, 1976, marked the formal inauguration of Our Lady of Fatima.
A life-sized image of the Virgin Mary at the altar was made of a Santol tree donated by Mr. Feleciano Cedano and was designed by a sculptor in Cebu.
The blessing ceremony of the chapel was done October 13, 1976, by His Excellency Most Rev. Cipriano Urgel, D.D., Archbishop of Palo.
Having a sign of success, Msgr. Quianzon launched doggedly on the second phase of his project which was the construction of the convent adjoining the church. The convent has complete facilities and may be used for live-in seminars with 100-200 persons attending July 16, 1981, Msgr. Quianzon was relieved by Msgr. Pastor Cotiangco. Four years later and months before the Golden Anniversary of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, the Most Reverend Cipriano Urgel Announced the creation of the parish in Ormoc City, Msgr. Cotiangco proposed the new parish named the Holy Redeemer Parish, however, the fervent devotion of the populace to the Blessed Virgin move the proposal not, but instead proposed that the parish be named Mother of the Redeemer Parish.
On the 17th of January 1985, 1st pastor of the new parish of the Mother of the Redeemer Parish was formally installed Fr. Wilfredo Alejan. In a short time, he repaired and renovated the parish rectory. After the renovation of the rectory were the construction of the sacristy and the remodeling of the altar and the belfry. Fr. Willy also organized the first set of the parish pastoral council.
The first set of the council was Encarnacion “Nene” Capahi (President), Arturo “Turing” Pantino (Vice-President), Sebastiana “Tianang” Dejaño (Secretary), Jesusa “Jessie” Ycoy (Treasurer). And Godofredo “Pedong” Sevilla (Auditor).
With the unremitting aid of the parishioner, it has realized a number of projects such as; the erection of the adoration chapel, the putting up of stained glass, the renovation of the social hall, the extension on the side of the main church, the construction of the aircon confessional booth, the renovation of the parish convent, the construction of the devotional side altars, the acquired position of the new sacrificial altar table and lectern, the construction of the parish pastoral center and many others all leading to the pastoral needs of the parishioners.
