History
Kananga was formerly one of the many barrios of the parish of Valencia, Ormoc, City. Valencia was then the biggest district of Ormoc but it was already a thriving parish independent from the mother parish of Ormoc. In 1950, Kananga was created as an independent municipality under the aegis of then Congressman Dominggo Veloso of Baybay. During the incumbency of the late Mayor Feliciano Larrazabal, a popular petition was sent to Bishop Lino Gonzaga to have Kananga created as an independent parish. In response to their petitions Kananga was declared as mission territory under the ministry of a visiting priest from Samar as a missionary pastor in the person of Rev. Fr. Trifon Garduce, followed by Rev. Fr. Vicente Cordero. Ultimately, Kananga was officially declared as a parish of the Holy Family on June 9, 1959 with Rev. Fr. Manuel Colasito as its Parish Priest.

After 60 years of existence as a Parish, the love, faith, and devotion among the Lay faithful Catholics of the community had amassed a very wide and extensive spiritual growth in the community. The devotion to the Holy Family is religiously desired among every individual household member by nurturing their lives in the spirit of deep faith and love reflected in proper parental guidance and care, producing a responsible future generation worthy to be called as missionary disciples of Christ. The vibrancy of faith, love, and charity among the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) members of the parish has brought forth a mission station at the very heart of the Holy Family Parish which is present now the St. John the Baptizer of Brgy. Tugbong, Kananga, Leyte.
Our Lady Queen of Peace a hermit Nun Congregation has also settled their way of life in solitude and prayer at Brgy. Natubgan, Kananga, Leyte. With the proper guidance of all those who served in the person of Christ in our Parish. The Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Finance Council were firmly established to cope with the demand of a shared pastoral ministry and temporal goods preservation and development. Just recently during the incumbency of Rev. Fr. Albert T. Opiniano as Parish Priest with the Parochial Vicar Rev. Fr. Ramon A. Fian, Jr. comes the birth of the New Angelicum School Inc. a place for learning and venue of sustainable evangelization especially to the future generations of the parish.
