MANILA – Contingency plans have been prepared in case Leyte experiences a rainy weather when Pope Francis visits the province on Saturday, a church official said.
Archdiocese of Palo spokesperson Fr. Amadeo Alvero said some changes in the original schedule and plans for the pope’s visit in Leyte on Saturday may be made in case it rains.
”May contingency kung uulan, kung anong sasakyan, at kung ano ang ipuputol na schedule,” Alvero told dzMM.
PAGASA weather forecaster Buddy Javier said a low pressure area (LPA) spotted about 2,000 kilometers east of Visayas-Mindanao region is forecast to enter the Philippine area of responsibility this Thursday.
The LPA could bring rains to parts of Visayas, including Leyte province where Pope Francis is set to visit on Saturday, January 17, to meet with victims of super typhoon ”Yolanda”.
Alvero said 78,000 tickets for the Pope’s mass at the Tacloban Airport were distributed to parishioners in the archdiocese. He said those with tickets can enter the space allotted for them as early as 6 p.m. of January 16.
He said another space has been provided for those who were not able to secure tickets.
Alvero said mass attendees are discouraged from bringing umbrellas, as these would prevent mass-goers at the back from seeing the Pope.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson, meanwhile, said only minor adjustments are needed in Leyte.
”Ang talagang hindi lang namin matantsa eh yung weather,” Singson said.
