Message of His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III
President of the Philippines
to welcome Pope Francis to the Philippines

[Released on January 12, 2015]

Our nation is honored to welcome His Holiness Pope Francis as he joins the Filipino people for an apostolic visit. This is a momentous occasion for us. We shall be in the presence of the Vicar of Christ, a man who leads the Catholic Church along the path of mercy and compassion.

In light of this, it is my fervent hope that we treat His Holiness’ visit with reverence and with all the solemnity befitting our faith. As Filipinos, we are well known for our warmth and hospitality, which I am certain we will not fail to demonstrate on this occasion. The Pope’s public engagements are expected to gather millions of the faithful. While such a turnout shows well the devotion of the Filipino Catholic, it also carries the corresponding dangers attached to large crowds: the potential for panic, or commotions that may lead to stampedes, which can threaten the lives of all involved.

As such, I call on all Filipinos to exercise the utmost discipline, in order to ensure that our gatherings are peaceful and orderly. Cooperate with the proper authorities, and follow the reminders of both government and the Church. Keep informed, remain vigilant, and take all precautions necessary to ensure your wellbeing and that of your fellow devotees. Three simple rules can go a long way in maintaining a peaceful and orderly celebration: As we participate in the activities, remember to keep calm; do not push; and do not run.

His Holiness’ visit is a recognition not only of the faith and strength of the Filipino, but also of our capacity to rise to any challenge. As we prepare for his arrival, may we remain mindful of our collective responsibility to ensure a successful and meaningful visit.

May his humility inspire us as a people to move closer to the suffering members of our communities; may his solidarity with the displaced and burdened move us to share the plight of our fellowmen who are relegated to the margins of our society. May his visit truly stir our faith and ignite our passion to enliven the ideals of justice, harmony, and genuine service.

As the Pope invigorates our flock, may we too serve as agents of renewal and galvanize our might for the inclusive and responsible stewardship of our nation.
