MANILA — The UK-based electronica band Ooberfuse will be performing “Mercy” on January 17 in Tacloban during Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines.
Composed by Ooberfuse singer, Tacloban-native Cherrie Anderson, “Mercy” is one of three official songs for Pope Francis’ visit to the Archdiocese of Palo, Leyte. The song is dedicated to the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda.
Anderson said she is grateful for the Pope’s decision to visit her birthplace and the band showed its gratitude by announcing that the song is free for sharing and distribution to all.
“‘Mercy’ was given to all of us for free, and so it is only right that we give our song ‘Mercy’ for free as well, rather than distribute it commercially,” she explained.
Anderson said “Mercy” highlights God’s message of love, grace, and restoration. Ooberfuse also recorded an acoustic version of the track in Filipino.
Ooberfuse member Hal St. John added: “Pope Francis’s visit to the victims and their families will help keep the plight of those who have lost everything, like some members of Cherrie’s family. ‘Mercy’ tries to emphasize that, in spite of the worst tragedies, God’s eternal mercy and compassion will sustain us through the darkest hour.”
The band has a long history of performing for past pontiffs as Ooberfuse was selected to play in the 2011 and 2013 World Youth Day in Spain and Brazil, respectively.
