The town of Tolosa was then part of the barrios of the Municipality of Tanauan.
The town was formally established as an independent municipality in 1861. Two years later the St. Michael the Archangel Church in Tolosa, Leyte became a parish on February 12, 1863. The first parish priest was Padre Vicente Gutierrez, a Spaniard.
The first Filipino priest of the parish was Padre Quintin Bautista.
The parish celebrates the feast of its patron every 8th of May.
The parish celebrated its 155th anniversary since the day of its foundation as a parish.
The present parish priest is Rev. Msgr. Alex T. Opiniano who was installed on February 16, 2015. He is the 37th parish priest of Tolosa.
Originally, the whole parish covers fourteen (14) barangays excluding the poblacion wherein the parish Church is located. The following are the names of the Barangays:

A New Parish was born – St. Peter the Apostle Parish, Telegrafo, Tolosa, Leyte.
Until the year 2007 when the archdiocese approved that barangay Telegrafo be a new parish comprising three (3) barangays namely: Barangay San Roque; Barangay Opong and Barangay Capangihan. Barangay Telegrafo was elevated as a parish with St. Peter the Apostle as its patron saint. The parish fiesta is celebrated every 29th of June the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. It was Rev. Fr. Dennis Molabola who started to administer the infant church of Telegrafo. At present the parish is administered by Rev. Fr. Virgilio Canete, its pastor.
Presently, there is a total of eleven (11) barangays under the main parish including Barangay Poblacion. Every barangay has a chapel wherein Masses and other religious activities are celebrated.
